This is the third best-of mixtape created by so far this year. And, having listened to all of soundofus.com's best-ofs, we would say this is probably the best of all its best-ofs, and perhaps the best best-of you'll hear all year. It would certainly make our top 10 best best-ofs.
This particular best-of mixes the finest classic, modern and neo soul – the 40 Soul Jewels Of 2013. It's been a great year for soul music, as this playlist attests – showcasing over 40 of the finest soulful cuts from the past 12 months.
Our pick of the tunes come courtesy of the inimitable Janelle Monae, the irrefutable Prince, the ingenious Gregory Porter, the incredible Laura Mvula and the indispensable Morcheeba. It's a must-hear mixtape.

There's no secret code. No formula. No equation. There's no secret word. No magical melody. No hidden chord. If it was easy, everyone would do it. But the truth is, even the best get it wrong sometimes ... There is no infallible route to the perfect pop song, but that's what makes pop perfection such a special thing.
So much so that the team here at Playlists.net has put its heads together to come up with what we consider to be the a consummate collection of the greatest pop songs ever recorded. And we're pretty pleased with how it looks.
From Prince to the Police, the La's to the Lightning Seeds, Diana Ross to Daft Punk – this is how pop music should be done, this is how pop music should sound.

Bands Under the Radar – aka Kami Knake – is fast becoming a firm favourite of ours. The Playlists.net user has been turning in some brilliant alternative music mixtapes recently, and this festive creation is no exception.
It's a mixtape that features 40 cuts of indie Christmas music and winter-imbued tunes – spanning almost 16 hours. Kami hosts of the BUTR music podcast and blog, so, as you'd expect, has exemplarily taste when it comes to these things.
This deftly put together playlist is full of lesser-known, but absolutely brilliant Christmas songs. A selection of our favourites come from Glasvegas, Badly Drawn Boy and For King & Country, but also check out numbers by Jake Brennan and the Confidence Men, Family Force 5 and Scissors for Lefty, to name just a few. Get ready to discover your new favourite Christmas song.

Greatest Christmas Pop Songs is one of the more uncynical festive mixtapes we've received so far this year. It's for the Christmas music purist. The holiday season optimist. The hardened santa supporter. It was put together by Giuseppe Maio, the Playlists.net user who simply describes it as a, "Playlist which includes the most famous and beautiful pop songs about Christmas."
All of your festive favourites are here, with one or two curveball's thrown in for good measure. It includes everyone from all I Want for Christmas Is You, It's Beginning to Look Like Christmas and Last Christmas, to tracks like Bob Dylan's It Must Be Santa, Wonderful Christmastime by the Shins and the beautiful Silver Bells by Bright Eyes'. Something for everyone, here. And more than enough festive cheer to defrost the heart of old Ebenezer Scrooge himself.

Are we tired of Christmas music, yet? Jokke Samen is. At least, he's tired of the same old festive tunes we hear every Christmas, over and over, year in, year out ... So the on-form Playlists.net user has done something about it. He's put together a a collection of "silly and explicit songs about Christmas – some more creative than others – with some classic Christmas blues thrown in, just to really set the mood."
Just check out some of these song titles: The Christmas F*** You Song; Oh S*** It's Christmastime; Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer; and who could forget that family favourite, Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis. It's a stellar line up of musical Scrooges, anti-Xmas exponents and Christmas miscreants – the likes of Rude Santa, Mad Tea Party, Those Dreaded Gnats and Tom Waits. One of the best alternative festive mixtapes we've ever heard.

Our arbiter of taste when it comes to all things, indie, left-field, underground and innovative, playlist partner the Orchard has been digging deep into its virtual crates to compile a collection of the best Nordic tunes from 2013. It's a handpicked selection of the year's most significant bands and artists from across Scandinavia.
As regular readers may now, we're more than a little partial to Scandinavian music, here at Playlists.net. And we can confirm, for anyone with the same proclivity, this mixtape is a beauty. We cannot recommend it highly enough.
Standout tracks come from the likes of Howl Baby Howl, Here Is Your Temple, the Unusual History of Ether and When Saints Go Machine, to name just a few. But it's class throughout. Give it a spin.

Leading a string of fitting mixtape tributes to the late, great Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela we received from you guys this week is this beautifully put together creation by Playlists.net user Sarah Jayne Anderson. "Behind many a great struggle," she says, "there is some good music championing the cause. That was, of course, the case with the anti-apartheid movement."
This playlist is a collection of songs – spanning numerous, diverse genres – all about Nelson Mandela, Steve Biko and the fight to end apartheid in South Africa. It stars everyone from LadySmith Black Mambazo, the Specials and Lucky Dube to Simple Minds, Brenda Fassie and a few suitably wise words from the great man himself. A must-hear.
Nelson Mandela, 1918-2013.

Sometimes, we read a description that's so out there, so outre, we just can't help but give the mixtape it's attached to a spin. One such example is Space: The Final Frontier: "Who doesn't love space?" it reads. "Space is great. Music about space is even greater. Float around in emptiness, fly on a rocket, explore the ends of the galaxy."
Playlsits.net user Koen van der Sommen is behind those particular attention-piquing words. Not only does his mixtape talk the talk, but it walks the walk. It features over 100 intergalactic tracks and taking in spacey music by the likes of Bowie, Muse, Moby, Elbow, Elton John, Air, Yes and many more. It's one small step for music, one giant leap for playlists.

Putting a slightly different spin on the familiar end-of-year lists doing the rounds in December and January, 50 Best Debut Albums of 2013 shines a light on breakout artists from the passed 12 months. It's a creation by Mindy Noise.
So, which acts have made the Playlsits.net user's final cut? To name just a few, London Grammar, Tom Odell, Rhye, Palma Violets and Woodkid.
Some of our favourites on this mixtape include albums from Valerie June, Laura Mvula, Karl Hyde, Lady Lamb the Beekeeper and Darkside. But this one is class throughout. With just one track from each artist, it's a superb retrospective of the very best new music 2013 had to offer. A must-hear.

Nothing says Christmas like the … blues? Well, that's according to one Playlists.net user: Gubi Mann has created a festive mixtape in his own inimitable style. It´s Grooving Santa! is full of, "The finest pieces of Christmas blues I could find on Spotify."
It features everyone from Sonny Boy Williamson, Lightnin' Hopkins and Louis Armstrong to Little Charlie & the Nightcats, Gatemouth Moore and Seasick Steve.
This is a two-hour long mixtape, standing at over 20 tracks tall, that takes in some of the best classic and contemporary blues ever recorded. If it's swampy, it's here. Delta? You got it. Harmonicas – Lots of 'em. A must-hear for blues heads. Highly recommended.
